Direction, Orientation, and Asymmetry

Horizontal—somewhat stable and calming, our routine orientation.

When the horizontal plane is tilted, the effect is disorienting and creates dynamism. You don't have to tilt much to create disorientation.

Vertical—somewhat more dynamic

Asymmetry Of The Screen

We tend to emphasize the right side of the screen and to perceive elements on the right or left differently.

  • For instance, if two people are on the screen shaking hands, it's common to assume that the person on the left approached the person on the right.
  • If a person is walking up hill from left to right, we view that as less effortful than a person walking up hill from left to right.
