Instructors in Psychology here commonly complain that their students are unable to write APA style reports.  By the time we get them they have already had one or two English courses designed to teach them how to write, including professional writing in APA-Style.  My friend in the English department advised me "When I taught the social science-directed section, I had my students use APA. Many teachers require APA in ENGL 1100 too. I don’t trust students when they say things like “I never had to write a research paper.” I teach APA style and give students a formatting checklist, and many still botch it. So I’m not surprised if students that you encounter seem like they’ve not learned a thing."
