We invite you to join us for "Re-Viewing Edmund Spenser's A View of the Present State of Ireland," a two-day, multidisciplinary symposium of seminar papers and discussion focused on Spenser's erudite and highly controversial work. Infamous in its day and ours, this humanist dialogue by a canonical English poet who settled in Ireland is one of the most important and disturbing tracts on colonial policy written by any early modern author.

Participants include David Edwards, Trevor Joyce, Jean Brink, Elizabeth Fowler, Karen Nelson, Brendan Kane, Katarzyna Lecky, Hannibal Hamlin, Maggie Vinter, Peter McQuillan, Willam Palmer, Ben Moran, Susan Oldrieve, Maryclaire Moroney, Kevin O'Sullivan, Nicholas Popper, Jean Feerick, Bridgette Slavin, John Soderberg, and the organizers.

The colloquium is organized by a loosely affiliated group of literature and history scholars with connections to the Cleveland area who have a keen interest in early modern Ireland and Spenser's work. The colloquium follows the format of a similar event on John Derricke's Image of Irelande, with a Discoverie of Woodkarne held at CWRU and sponsored by the Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities in May, 2016. CWRU is located adjacent to the Cleveland Museum of Art and Severance Hall, home of the Cleveland Orchestra.
