Driver Fitness Medical Guidelines

The Driver Fitness Medical Guidelines is a publication by the National Highway Traffic Safety Association and the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators. The purpose is to provide guidance to assist licensing agencies in making decisions about an individual fitness for driving. The guidelines are voluntary based on research and best practices by a group of experts.

For physicians, these guidelines can be used as a resource to review the evidence about various medical conditions and whether the experts believe there is enough evidence to licensure decisions based on diagnosis.
