Textbook:      P.K. Pathria, Statistical Mechanics, 2nd edition, (Butterworth-Heinemann, 1996).  ISBN 0-7506-2469-8.

Description: Thermodynamics with applications and an introduction to statistical mechanics. Topics include statistical basis of thermodynamics, Maxwell relations, phase changes, idea gases, kinetic theory of gases, quantum statistics, and fluctuations.

 

Prerequisite: Intermediate thermodynamics.

 

Grades:      40% Homework and In-class participation

40% Tests (20% for each of 2 tests) 

20% Final Exam
