Facility Layout:  Workcenters (Job Shop) & Grouping Functions Together

Click here if the clip does not play.

Background:

Workcenter layouts are also called job-shop or functional layouts.  A workcenter layout arranges workcenters consisting of like processes in a way to optimize their relative placement and in turn optimize throughput and time in the system.

  *  Objectives of a workcenter layout could include:

    - minimizing handling costs, or

    - minimizing unnecessary movement, or

    - maximizing throughput

Questions for Thought:

1. The clip speaks to the creation of the Spee-Dee Service System for creating fast food.  How many iterations did the McDonlad brothers have to go through before they got it "right"?

2.  In the clip what were some of the issues that the workers were having as the design was being created?

3. Give an example of a workcenter layout you have seen lately or maybe you were "lucky" enough to work in the fast food industry and can give your personal industry insight.
