Rising Tensions Overview

The events that precipitated the Wilmington massacre fundamentally shaped the ideas, beliefs and expectations that prevailed in 1898. Emancipation and Reconstruction brought fundamental constitutional changes that spurred reaction from NC legislators and judges who feared the effects of “political equality” and “social equality.” Ordinary men and women actually resisted these laws by defending their claims to interracial marriage, labor and emigration rights, and third-party organization.
