Finding a Journal in the Library Catalog

Please use Microsoft Internet Explorer to view this document.

For the purpose of this example, suppose you are trying to answer the following questions:

QUESTIONS:

a. Is the journal: The Psychological Record, volume 37, available in Joyner Library?

b. If so, is it located in the Joyner Current Periodicals, the Joyner Stacks, or the Joyner Microforms?

c. If it is located in the Joyner Stacks, what is its call number?

Here’s how you should proceed:

1. Go to www.lib.ecu.edu and click on “Joyner Catalog.”

2. Select Journal Title Keyword from the Search Options drop-down list.

3. Type the journal title in the textbox provided, and (5) click Go.

4. Scroll down to review the results in order to determine whether the library has the journal, volume, and issue of interest.

As shown above, the location of the journal is described beside the word “Collection.”

·        If the publication is available in the library building, it will be located in one of three possible places, as indicated next:

a.                  Joyner Current Per – This section of the library, which is on the first floor, contains “current periodicals,” i.e., the newer journal volumes/issues that the library has recently received. The newer volumes/issues are arranged in alphabetical order by journal title. Therefore, they’re easy to find without a call number.

b.                  Joyner Stacks – This section of the library spans several floors. If the volume/issue of interest is located in the Joyner Stacks, you will need a call number to find it. Your search results will list the call number beside the abbreviation “Call No” any time the journal you want is located in the Joyner Stacks.

c.                  Joyner Microforms – This section of the library is in the basement. Journals on microform are arranged alphabetically. Therefore, they’re easy to find without a call number.

The volumes and issues that the library possesses are listed beside the word “Main.” In the example below, for instance, Main: v. 1-261937-1976 means that the Joyner Stacks contain volumes 1-26, which were published between 1937 and 1976.

5. If the journal volume/issue of interest is located in the library building, simply copy down its location (and the call number if the volume is located in the Joyner Stacks), and then walk to the library to find it.

For the purpose of this example, the answer to the questions above would be:

a. Is the journal: The Psychological Record, volume 37, available in Joyner Library? YES

b. If so, is it located in the Joyner Current Periodicals, the Joyner Stacks, or the Joyner Microforms? JOYNER STACKS

c. If it is located in the Joyner Stacks, what is its call number? BF 1 P68
