Introduction of Karl L. Wuensch

     It is a great honor for me to introduce East Carolina University's recipient of the Board of Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching-Dr. Karl Wuensch. For three semesters, I was a student in Dr. Wuensch's graduate statistics classes at East Carolina University. During that time, I was able to interact with Dr. Wuensch on many different levels and I grew to admire his teaching ability and style. Dr. Wuensch has high expectations of all of his students and he believes that each student will be successful. In his quest to make us all successful at statistics, he removes the obstacles that keep us from excelling, such as doubt and frustration, and he motivates us to do our very best. Graduate statistics is a very difficult subject. Dr. Wuensch expects that we learn the difficult material, and because he expects it, he instills the ability in each of us so that we can be successful in learning.

     Dr. Wuensch's attitude is key to his success as a teacher. When Dr. Wuensch is in front of his classroom, it is obvious that he has a love of learning himself which he passes on to each person in the room. His love of learning coupled with his love of teaching makes him a very effective educator. Add to this a great sense of humor and you have a powerful force. Students find themselves asking questions about stats, but also about all of their other classes as well, just so that they can get Dr. Wuensch's view of the situation. I think this level of trust is indicative of what Dr. Wuensch represents to his students; He is a teacher first and foremost, but he is also a friend.

     Dr. Wuensch impacted my life in such a positive way, and I am eternally grateful for all that he taught me about statistics, about teaching, about learning, and about life. I know that Dr. Wuensch brought me to a new level in the use of technology that I would not have achieved on my own. This has benefited me greatly and I have been able to share this knowledge in Dr. Wuensch's way with my coworkers. In my mind, Dr. Wuensch has set the standard in teaching, and he deserves recognition for his hard work, loyalty and dedication.

     Ladies and gentlemen, it is my great honor to present to you the recipient of the Board of Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching: Dr. Karl Wuensch.
