Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching
- This is the BIG one.
- Nominees must be tenured, have taught here at least seven years, and not
have won this award previously.
- Faculty colleagues, students, administrators, alumni, or the faculty
member emself may nominate.
- Nomination letters are due in the Faculty Senate office by the
15th of September.
- The portfolio, including a video, is due in the Faculty Senate office by
the 1st of November.
- Copies of the portfolios of previous winners can be viewed in the Center
for Faculty Excellence (2303 Old Cafeteria Building).

Board of Governors Distinguished Professor for Teaching Awards
- Nominees must be full time, have taught here for at least three years,
and not won this award in the last four years.
- Chairs should receive an email in August about the deadline for
submission of nominations.
- Once nominated by the department, the candidate submits to the College a
portfolio of not more than 20 pages length. This deadline may be very
early in September. For 2007 the deadline is the
7th of September.
- Procedures for selection of nominees from the Department of Psychology
are detailed here.
- A selection committee at the College level reviews the submitted
portfolios and chooses five nominees.
- The Dean of Arts and Sciences submits five nominees for this award by
not later than the 15th of September.
- These nominees then prepare a more substantial portfolio which is due in
the Faculty Senate office by the 1st of
November.
- For the 2006-2007 academic year, Marieke Van Willigen was in charge of the teaching awards nominations.

Scholar-Teacher Award
- Faculty who wish to be considered for this award submit the necessary
materials to the College of Arts and Sciences by the
27th of
November.
- The College of Arts and Sciences selects up to three winners.
- The emphasis is on integrating research into classroom teaching and
mentoring.

University Alumni Awards for Outstanding Teaching
- Nominees must have taught here for at least three years and not won this
award in the last four years.
- Each faculty unit may nominate one faculty member per ten members in the
unit.
- Selection criteria must be based on the "Seven Characteristics of
Effective Teaching" in Faculty Senate Resolution 91-29. The SOIS is
not mentioned in those criteria.
- Units should allow consideration of any eligible faculty member who
requests consideration for nomination.
- Procedures for selection of nominees from the Department of Psychology
are detailed here.
- Nomination letters from unit code administrators are due in the Faculty
Senate office by the 15th of September.
- Teaching portfolios are due in the Faculty Senate office by the
1st of November.
- Finalists will be asked to provide a video tape of a class session.
- Copies of the portfolios of previous winners can be viewed in the Center

Max Ray Joyner Award for Faculty Service Through Continuing Education
- This is to honor those who teach courses offered through Continuing
Education, online or face-to-face.
- Each faculty unit may nominate one faculty member per ten members in the
unit.
- Selection criteria must be based on the "Seven Characteristics of
Effective Teaching" in Faculty Senate Resolution 91-29. The SOIS is
not mentioned in those criteria.
- Units should allow consideration of any eligible faculty member who
requests consideration for nomination.
- Nomination letters from unit code administrators are due in the Faculty
Senate office by the 15th of September.
- Nominees provide a portfolio of evaluative materials to the Ad Hoc
Teaching Awards Committee
- Finalists will be asked to provide a CD that demonstrates and summarizes
their distance education classes.

Hazel F. Stapleton Memorial Excellence In Teaching Award
- Those eligible for nomination will include all permanently tenured,
probationary appointment, and fixed-term faculty in Psychology at ECU who have
taught at least 4 courses per academic year (excluding summer school) for the
previous two academic years. Persons who have won this award are not eligible to
win it again until at least three years have passed.
- Nominees are selected by the Psychology Faculty Development and Awards
Committee, on the basis of Student Opinion of Instruction Survey (SOIS)
ratings. Nominations may also be made by any faculty member in the
Department of Psychology.
- Nominated faculty are invited to prepare a teaching portfolio which will
be read by faculty in the Department of Psychology.
- At their regular faculty meeting in March, the faculty in the Department
of Psychology select the recipient of the award.
