The Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching is the highest teaching award in the University of North Carolina System. Only twice has a professor from the College of Arts and Sciences at East Carolina University won this award. In 2000, Dr. Karl L. Wuensch, Psychology, won this award, and in 2004 Dr. Michael Spurr, Mathematics, won it.
Recipients of this honor receive a cash award of $1,000 and a nicely engraved plate. Three faculty in Psychology have received this award.

In the Spring of 2001, Dr. Jeannie Golden won the Alumni Distinguished Professor for Teaching Award. Finalists, who are chosen on the basis of their teaching portfolios, submit to the selection committee a videotape of one of their classes in action. Dr. Golden has provided a copy of part of that portfolio, a statement of her teaching philosophy, for you to read.
East Carolina University awards the Scholar/Teacher award to those faculty who have demonstrated an exceptional ability effectively to integrate research or creative activity into their teaching and mentoring. The College of Arts and Sciences chooses not more than three persons annually to receive this award. In 2007 two of those three came from the Department of Psychology. Faculty selected for this award participate in a symposium, where each gives a presentation. Each recipient receives $3,000 to spend on scholarly activities. Three faculty in the Department of Psychology have received this award.
