Projects

·         Book: Evaluating Educational Interventions:
Single-Case Design for Measuring Response to Intervention
by T. Chris Riley-Tillman and Matthew K. Burns

Description from the publisher: This user-friendly, practical book is the first guide to single-case design written specifically for practitioners using response-to-intervention (RTI) models in schools. It provides essential skills for analyzing and presenting data to support valid educational decision making. Step-by-step explanations and many illustrative examples render complex concepts accessible and applicable to day-to-day work with elementary and secondary students.

·         Book: School-Based Behavioral Assessment: Informing Intervention and Instruction by Sandra Chafouleas, T. Chris Riley-Tillman, and George Sugai.

Description from the publisher: This indispensable book helps school practitioners go beyond putting a label on student behavior problems-it shows how to use assessment to partner with teachers and students to develop effective solutions.

·         New Website: www.directbehaviorratings.com

Description: This site is dedicated to disseminating information about Direct Behavior Ratings (DBRs) surrounding two specific purposes. The first purpose is to provide a unified platform for the presentation of research regarding DBRs. The second purpose is to provide practical and user-friendly information about best practices in the use of DBRs that can assist educators, students, and parents in supporting the success of students.

·         Resource for Practitioners: The East Carolina University Evidence Based Intervention Project

Description: The purpose of the project is to provide a guide to the selection of interventions based on the most likely reason for the academic or social behavior problem.

Workshop Information

Dr. Riley-Tillman conducts workshops on a range of topics related to effective intervention with students in schools using a problem solving model (e.g. Response to Intervention and Positive Behavior Supports and Interventions).  These workshops focus on in depth understanding of the technical demands of using evidence based interventions.  In addition to leading the ECU Evidence Based Intervention Project, he also has been a part of several projects with other educational researchers related to the application of best practices in schools including writing two books and the development of Direct Behavior Ratings. Over the last 10 years he has conducted workshops for school districts, state school psychology and teacher associations, and at conferences.  Recent workshops include:

·         Measuring Student Response to Intervention: Using Data to Evaluate Interventions

Description: There has been a great deal written about Response to Intervention (RTI), but there has been little attention to the required level of rigor needed to make high-stakes decisions such as when to change an intervention or move to a more intense level including special education. This workshop is designed to introduce the critical role of single case design (SCD) and analysis for evaluating educational interventions in an RTI model.  Through case-studies and lectures workshop participants will learn about specific SCDs that are appropriate at each Tier as well as graphing and analysis strategies.

·         Evidence-based Interventions for Behavior Problems in Schools: Selection, Implementation, and Analysis

Description: Alterations in IDEA have made the use of Evidence Based Interventions (EBI) mandatory for school intervention work (Response to Intervention). In practice, though, selecting, implementing and analyzing the effectiveness of EBIs can be a difficult process. In this workshop, several EBIs for behavior problems in the schools will be presented. In addition, implementation and analysis issues will be discussed. The goal of the workshop is to go beyond the list of “what works” into a presentation of “how to use what works”.

·         Response to Intervention:  Practical Skills for Human Service Professionals to be Effective in the Future of Servicing Children in Need in Schools

Description: 'Response to Intervention' is an emerging approach to the diagnosis of Learning Disabilities that holds considerable promise. A critical component in the response to intervention model is that a member of the intervention team has the expertise to design intervention programs with a high degree of internal validity.  Internal validity is critical in that the intervention team must be able to equivocally state whether the intervention did, or did not result in a successful outcome.  The expertise to manage interventions in a manner that results in a high level of internal validity is based on an understanding of single subject methodology.  In addition, it is critical that a member of the intervention teams has a fundamental understanding of how to analyze intervention outcome data.  The purpose of this workshop is to provide a primer on RTI, selection of interventions using brief functional assessment, feasible collection of intervention outcome data and finally single subject methodology and an overview of the effective analysis of intervention data.
