The aim of this course is to gain a sense of the developments and wide
variety of musical styles and aesthetic approaches of Western Art Music in the
twentieth century as they developed out of the rich and lengthy musical
tradition that preceded it. Ideally, you will develop your ability to perceive a musical
work’s events and internal relationships by enhancing your perceptual
skills—tools necessary for intelligent and critical listening—by listening
to a variety of musical works in a critical manner. As result of this process,
you will develop an awareness of the characteristics of many of the different
styles, compositional procedures and formal designs of 20th century
music, and broaden your own aesthetic criteria.
1. Regular, prompt attendance and class participation are strictly required. You are permitted one unexcused absence. Only medical/dean's excuses will excuse absence. Each unexcused absence, beyond one, will adversely effect your grade.
2. Completion of all reading and written assignments, including presentations on readings, comparison papers, and a research paper.
3. Quizzes (both frequent and unannounced) and a final exam (May 5, 8 a.m.) [back to top]
Your grade will be based on many components, roughly weighted as follows:
Presentations on Readings: 10%
"Questioning”: 10%
Quizzes: 20%
Comparison Papers: 20%
Research Paper: 20%
Final Exam: May 5, 8 a.m. 20%Grading is on a standard scale
> 90% = A

> 70% = C
> 60% = D
