Title: Benjamin 100-word Book Review
Date: 17 May 2004
Summary: One of the books required for my course is the "how to" book, A Student's Guide to History. My professor has asked me to write a 100-word book review on it.
The book contains five chapters and two appendices. Benjamin discusses the discipline of history and how it is used. He then offers advice on how to read history assignments, take notes in class, study and take exams, research and write various papers, and use the computer as a resource.
Benjamin has provided a handbook that is easily understood and if followed, should help me acheive an "A" in this course.
Reaction: I wish I had had this book earlier at ECU, or even in high school. It gives students much needed direction. Its research, study, and writing tactics are interdisciplinary. I fully expect it to help me in other courses as well.
Title: Benjamin Question #8, "How should you give a formal
class talk?
Date: 17 May 2004
Summary: Speaking in front of people can be difficult and requires much practice. Benjamin's advice to students who give class presentations: (1) take the assignment and preparation seriously; (2) write your speech out in advance either word for word or in note form, but in either case try to remain animated when you present your speech in class; (3) cover all the important points in the assignment; (4) practice your speech with a friend; and (5) remember that this assignment has long-range implications for success beyond your course.
Reaction: (Answer all eleven Benjamin questions, then react once--do not react eleven times.)
