1. Given your knowledge of Chinese history, and the consciousness among Chinese of the so-called “barbarian problem,” explain the EP3 spy plane incident and Chinese reactions to it. Why could they be seen as “unreasonable,” at least from the American perspective, but thoroughly “reasonable” from their own point of historical view?

1. Compare and contrast postwar Japan with prewar Japan, focusing especially on political, military, strategic, and diplomatic developments. Which of the two Japans would you prefer to live in and why?
 
 

2. To what extent can the Communist leadership of the People’s Republic of China be credited with anything positive in Chinese history of the 20th century? What are their accomplishments, their failures?
