PROJECT 7: HOW WOULD YOU FEEL?

    By Tammy Wicks

    OVERVIEW

The North Carolina Standard Course of Study, Social Studies, Curriculum for first and second grade focus on a study of home, school, neighborhood, and local communities. Living in Eastern North Carolina, students have a unique opportunity to learn about slavery as part of the history of the community in which they live. Introducing the topic of slavery in the context of their local community is a meaningful way to help the students learn about history from multiple perspectives. Exposure to diverse perspectives of history will also occur through the use of children's literature. It will be introduced through direct quotes from non-fiction depictions of slavery, as well as numerous children's realistic fiction and non-fiction texts.
