    PROJECT 5: TRADITION AND CULTURE
    Integrated Learning Project

    By Lynn Whittington

    OVERVIEW

This grade 3 unit is designed for use with the Allen Parker Slave Narrative and Yoko by Rosemary Wells. In this learning experience, children will read Recollections of Slavery Times by Allen Parker and participate in class discussions. Through reading the narrative, the class will focus on the traditions of slaves during that time period, and similarities and differences of traditions in different cultures. The children will then read Yoko by Rosemary Wells and participate in an International Food Day and research and design clothing that would be appropriate to the matching culture. The purpose of the unit is to identify traditions in different cultures in the past and present time and celebrate differences within cultures.

This learning project integrates a variety of cultures and cultural traditions. The traditions documented in the Allen Parker Slave Narrative include, but are not limited to, feasts and dances during the Christmas season and coon hunting. Yoko includes traditions such as food and clothing. The activities within this project include identifying traditions within a family unit such as food and clothing. However, there are other cultural traditions that can be found within Yoko such as the relationships of families and how different cultures respond to conflict.
