    PROJECT 1: A UNIT ON SLAVERY

    OBJECTIVES

    The following objectives meet the standards for the National Council for the Social Studies for early grades:

    • Time, Continuity, & Change, IIB: Demonstrate an ability to use correctly vocabulary associated with time such as past, present, future, and long ago; read and construct simple timelines; identify examples of change; and recognize examples of change, and recognize examples of cause and effect relationships.
    • Time, Continuity, & Change, IIC: Compare and contrast different stories or accounts about past events, people, places, or situations, identifying how they contribute to our understanding of the past.
    • Power, Authority, and Governance, VIC: Give examples of how government does or does not provide for needs and wants of people, establish order and security, and manage conflict.
    • Civic Ideals & Practices, XB: Identify examples of rights and responsibilities of citizens.

     

    The following objective meets the standards for National Geography, grades K-4:

    • 13, Human Systems: How the forces of cooperation among people influences division and control of the earth's surface

     

    The following objectives meet the standards for the North Carolina Standard Course of Study in grade three:

    • 2.1 Distinguish similarities and differences among children at different times and places
    • 3.3 Clarify the roles of children and adults in communities that differ from onešs own time and place
    • 4.4 Evaluate procedures for dealing with problems and conclude which are more just
    • 6.2 Assess the impact of change on lives of people in communities studied
    • 7.3 Identify a variety of examples of cultural traditions
