    PROJECT 1: A UNIT ON SLAVERY

    MATERIALS

    The following materials will be needed for Activity One:

    • Chart paper and tape
    • Easel markers (for chart paper)
    • Vocabulary worksheet (provided)
    • Pencils for students
    • Book: Daily Life on a Southern Plantation 1853 by Paul Erikson

    The following materials will be needed for Activity Two:

    • Book: Follow the Drinking Gourd by Jeanette Winter
    • Poster-sized pieces of white construction paper (enough for groups of five to use)
    • Assorted markers or crayons

    The following materials will be needed for Activity Three:

    • Book: A Girl Called Boy by Belinda Hurmence
    • Copy of The Allen Parker Slave Narrative retrieved from the World Wide Web: http://core.ecu.edu/hist/cecelskid/
    • Student Journal (either handmade with notebook paper or a bought spiral notebook)
    • Critical Thinking-with summary of chapters-handout (provided)
    • Pencils for students
    • Clipboards (for students to bear down on when writing in journals)

    The following materials will be needed for Activity Four:

    • KWL chart (made in Activity One)
    • Easel markers (for KWL chart)
    • Student Journal (completed from Activity Three)
    • Book: Follow the Drinking Gourd (from Activity Two)
    • Computer laboratory (with enough computers for teams of students) with access to the World Wide Web.
