PROJECT 3: ALLEN PARKER SLAVE NARRATIVE
Third Grade
By Karyl F. Willis
CHILDREN'S LITERATURE
Edwards, P. D. (1997). Barefoot: Escape on the underground railroad.
New York: Scholastic.
A runaway slave is "helped" by the animals along a path that leads to a house that is part of the Underground Railroad. The story tells how the animals made noises to guide the slave or distract the Search Team. The dark pictures give the book a "night" feeling and anticipation as to if the slave will make it to the right "station" of the Underground Railroad.
This story works well with this unit because of the use of animals and how they help the slaves.
Hopkinson, D. (1993). Sweet Clara and the freedom quilt.
New York: Random House.
Clara is separated from her mama and works as a field hand for awhile. Once she learns to sew, she works in the "Big House" where she hears about all the places around the plantation. She uses scraps of material to sew a quilt that she uses as a map to escape and rescues her family and goes north to freedom.
This story works well with this unit because it shows that families were separated, how they worked, and how some escaped to freedom by working together.
