    PROJECT 6: POST-CIVIL WAR CHOICES:
    Ex-Slave Settlements
    vs.
    Colonization of Liberia

    By Suzanne Averitt

    OVERVIEW

This activity is designed for use in 7th grade social studies classes. It allows students to investigate the lives of American slaves after the Civil War. They will begin by reading The Allen Parker Story and after that will use various resources to determine what happened to slaves after they attained freedom.

One group of students will learn about the migration and settlement of freedmen. They will look especially at James City, a village east of New Bern, North Carolina but may also investigate other settlements that were built for freed slaves. This group will look at living conditions, educational opportunities and job availability for freed slaves who stayed in the United States.

Another group will learn about the colonization of Liberia. This group will look at the reasons ex-slaves were sent or chose to go to Liberia and the agreements made between the American Colonization Society and local chiefs. In addition, like the other group, they will learn about the living conditions, educational opportunities and job availability for ex-slaves who went back to Africa.

After each group has garnered the necessary information, they will participate in a debate. Before the debate, they will be given specific questions for which they will need to formulate a written answer. In addition, they will be asked other questions during the debate that will necessitate a synthesis of the information they have obtained during their research.
