PROJECT 6: POST-CIVIL WAR CHOICES:
Ex-Slave Settlements
vs.
Colonization of Liberia

Students Studying Liberia:
Students will use websites such as:
www.memory.loc.gov/ammem/gmdhtml/libhtml/liberia.html
and www.prodigy.net/jtell/Liberia.htm . Through their research, they will answer the following questions:
- Why did certain people in the United States want to send the ex-slaves back to Africa? (NGS 9, 12, & 13; CSSS- V,VI, X)
- What did the American Colonization Society have to do to find a home for the ex-slaves who were returning to Africa? (NCSCOS-8.2, 8.4)
- How was life different for the ex-slaves after they went to Liberia? (NCSCOS-1.1, 1.3, 2.2, 5.1, 5.2, 9.1, 9.3, 9.5, 11.2; NGS- 4; CSSS-I, IV)
- Describe life for modern day Liberians. (NCSCOS- 12.1, 12.2, 12.3)
Students Studying Settlements in the United States:
Students will use websites such as: www.core.ecu.edu/hist/cecelskid/links.htm
and www.docsouth.unc.edu.neh/neh.html as well as newspaper articles and local archives to investigate ex-slave settlements in the south, especially James City, North Carolina.
Through their research, they should be able to answer the following questions:
- Why did ex-slaves migrate to common locations and was that helpful or harmful for them? In what ways. (NGS-6, 9, 12; CSSS-I, IV, V, VI, X; NCSCOS-9.3)
- When the slaves were freed, why did some choose to stay on the plantations with their former owners? Was this a good or bad choice for most?( CSSS- I, V, VI; NGS-6, 9, 12, 13; NCSCOS-2.3, 9.3)
- What was the political role of ex-slaves during reconstruction? (CSSS-VI )
- Discuss the current status (social, political, and economic) of African-Americans in the US today( CSSS-I, IV, V, VI, X)
