PROJECT 6: POST-CIVIL WAR CHOICES: By Suzanne Averitt
ACTIVITY #2 At the beginning of class, students will write what they know about options that were available to slaves after they were freed. They will do this using sticky notes by putting one piece of information per note. After doing this, if they have not brought up the colonization of Liberia, I will introduce the idea. At that point, I will ask them everything they would like to know about either Liberia or U.S. settlements and write those on individual sticky notes. In this way, we will form a K-W-L chart. From there, the students will choose whether they want to learn more about freed slave settlements in the United States or the colonization of Liberia. The L section on the chart can be filled in as the students learn more about their topics. There is no assessment for this activity but participation is required and will be their class grade for the day.
