    PROJECT 5: TRADITION AND CULTURE
    Integrated Learning Project

    By Lynn Whittington

    ACTIVITY ONE

    TRADITIONS

The activities are to be done as part of a unit on traditions and cultures. First, define traditions and give a couple of examples. Traditions can occur for people in a culture, but families also have their own traditions. Have students make a list of traditions in which their families engage. Ask students to share one or two of their traditions with the rest of the class. Encourage other children who have the same traditions to comment as well. Make a master list of traditions. Highlight traditions that many of the children share. Talk about where the traditions began and why they occur.

Have them read different chapters in the Allen Parker Slave Narrative and write down traditions that are mentioned in the narrative. Place that list beside the list of class traditions.

Brainstorm traditions that occur in other cultures. Describe the traditions. Since many traditions involve food, name the foods associated with many traditions. For example, the traditional food eaten on Thanksgiving is turkey. While most families have the same dishes for Thanksgiving each year, their meals are different from the meals of other families.
