PROJECT 3: ALLEN PARKER SLAVE NARRATIVE
    Third Grade

    By Karyl F. Willis

    ACTIVITY TWO

Refer to the concept board; review some of the items on the board about slavery.
Review the bubble map on the first four chapters of the Narrative.

    • Read Chapters 5-8 of the narrative. Show pictures from the web site that goes with this section. Again ask the students to help complete the bubble map on the slave's life.

    • After completing the bubble map, review the part of the story where Mr. Parker describes the owl and how the slaves used the sounds from the owl to help guide their way. Show the students the book Barefoot. Read the story to the students. Once completed, have the students make a list of animals that were in the story and tell how they might have helped the runaway slave. Ask the students to compare the similarities and differences between the two stories.

    • Refer to the concept board to add, remove, change, or ask new ideas about slavery. Can do the concept board on several big pieces of paper to document the increased understanding of the students as they move through the activities.
