PROJECT 3: ALLEN PARKER SLAVE NARRATIVE
    Third Grade

    By Karyl F. Willis

    ACTIVITY ONE

    • Ask students what they know about Slavery. Write down statements on a chart to refer to later (concept board).

    • Before reading the Narrative, display a North Carolina map on the board, show the students where Kinston is on the map and show where Edenton is on the map. Have the students describe where Edenton is in relation to Kinston. If desired, teacher may show pictures from Chowan County.

    • Read Chapters 1-4 from the Allen Parker Narrative. Show the pictures from the web site concerning the homes and area that were described in this part of the book. Discuss story with students. On another sheet of chart paper, make a bubble map describing the slavesą lives, what they did, cooked with, wore, ate, etc. Leave some room to add more with the next activity.

    • Refer to the concept board with studentsą statements about slavery. Ask students if any have changed their feelings, beliefs, and thoughts about slavery after hearing the first four chapters of the narrative. Document those changes on the board. Also ask the students if they have any questions about slavery that they might feel will be answered in the narrative or might be able to find out more about through other readings.
