PROJECT 2: COMMUNITIES: Past and Present By Erin Redwine
ACTIVITY TWO NOTE: Display the graphic organizer of the plantation communities. A. Facilitate discussion with students about the community in which they live. (Focus on same categories: education, work, leisure activities, traditions, and etc.) Ask the class: What buildings are in our community? What jobs are in our community? Do people get paid for working? What do people in our community do for fun? Where do we live in our community? What neighborhoods does our community have? NOTE: Prompt students to use the plantation graphic organizer to generate ideas and compare similarities and differences. B. Chart the students' responses on the board. C. Split the class into two groups. Give one group the plantation community graphic organizer and give the other group the graphic organizer on our own community. Direct to students to create models of their community using the art supplies given to them. Include buildings, roads, homes, farms, and etc. Also include items we have focused on throughout the unit. Encourage the students to depict the communities using the graphic organizers as a guide for what the community would look like. NOTE: Creating these models will continue over a few days. D. After the students complete their models, each group will present theirs to the other group. Models will be displayed. Teacher will generate a discussion to summarize the community of the past and our community today. Ask the students: When looking at the models, do you see any similarities? Any differences? What are the pro's and con's of living in each community? Which community would you rather live in? Why? What improvements have been made? What things do we still need to work on in our community?
