PROJECT 2: COMMUNITIES: Past and Present By Erin Redwine
ACTIVITY ONE A. Discuss and review the Allen Parker slave narrative. Ask the class: What was life like as a slave? What was plantation life like? NOTE: Prompt students to discuss all aspects of a plantation community. (education, work, leisure activities, traditions, mealtimes, feelings/attitudes, family life, children's roles on the plantation, and etc.) B. Chart the students' responses on a graphic organizer. C. Read the picture book Daily Life on a Southern Plantation, 1853. Discuss and chart all aspects of a plantation community (see NOTE above). Then discuss the similarities and differences between the two plantations. Ask the class: How is this plantation different from the plantation Allen Parker lived and worked on? Were there similar things in both communities? Differences? D. Add new information about this plantation on the graphic organizer so students can see the comparison. E. Ask students to get out their journals. Write this prompt on the board: Pretend you are going to travel back in time to the plantation in the South. What three things would you want to take with you to that community? Why would you take them? How would these things change life for you there? What things might you need to remember to help you survive? NOTE: Discuss some examples with the students (plow to work in the fields, money to buy food and clothes, and etc.)
