PROJECT 1: A UNIT ON SLAVERY

    By Dorothy V. Matheson

    ACTIVITY TWO

    • Discuss what is written on the KWL chart (which should still be posted) you completed as a class yesterday as a review. Ask students what they remembered most from the book Daily Life on a Southern Plantation 1853.

    • Tell them that you are going to read them a story about the escaping of slaves in the 1800s. Begin by showing them the cover of the book, Follow the Drinking Gourd by Jeanette Winter, and asking them why they think the one woman might be looking at the sky. Read the story aloud, reviewing vocabulary as you read. Tell students to pay particular attention to what happens in the story, as they will do a group activity when you are finished.

    • When finished reading, put the students in groups of five, giving them one large piece (poster-sized) of white construction paper and assorted markers or crayons (markers will show up better).

    • In their groups, they are to sequence important events of the story in order using ONLY DRAWINGS. No words are to be written as explanation. (This may be drawn in a circle format, and you may want to model the activity first.) Tell them that once they are finished, whatever they have drawn, they must explain in detail, with words to the class. Also, make sure they know that each group member MUST draw something and that they will NOT be graded on their artistic ability.

    • When each group is finished, have them bring their poster to the front of the room as a group, and then individually explain his/her drawing to the class. (This technique is termed a concept map.)

    • Review the activity by comparing and contrasting each group's concept map.
