Add to your professional toolbox by expanding your research, writing, and information design abilities. Investigate different styles, forms, and conventions used in writing about technical topics and for technical contexts. Develop skills valued in the workplace including the ability to plan, manage, and execute writing projects. Learn principles for developing and producing reader-based documents—including readability, comprehensibility, usability, and memorability. Create informative texts, helpful graphics, and interesting multi-media presentations in print and electronic formats.

This course is an introduction to the field of technical writing. The main purpose is to help you

  • examine the genres and processes of developing technical documents, including strategies for planning, drafting, editing, and testing.

  • gain experience in preparing common forms of technical and professional communication.

  • consider technical and professional communication work environments; work styles, ethics and professional practices, and current issues and practices. .

The course requires regular participation in discussion, short activities, and projects.

You should feel free to contact me as needed about course readings, resources, and projects.  You must take the initiative to get help when you need it.  If I do not hear from you, I assume that you are not having difficulties. I'm here on campus and I know some of you are. I am happy to meet face-to-face to go over concepts and "how-tos."
