Writing for Business and Industry

Introduction

This writing intensive course is designed to help you develop professional writing and communication design skills. We will read about, write about, use, and design various types of communications. Throughout the course, you'll be encouraged to think about rhetorical, aesthetic, and practical aspects of communication. We will also explore the relationships among different types of professional activities, communication design, ethics, technology, and information. You’ll participate in a variety of individual and group activities that will help you evaluate and practice the ways that people communicate in business and industry.

Course Objectives

The objectives for this class include helping you to:

  • Assess the contexts, purposes, audiences, and processes of written and visual communication in the workplace.
  • Recognize and analyze effective and ineffective written and visual workplace communication.
  • Learn and effectively use electronic strategies for collaborative work in preparing workplace communication.
  • Produce various types of written and visual workplace communication that are appropriate for and that appeal to various audiences.
  • Use a variety of computer programs, including word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software.
  • Balance visual and verbal elements of communication in documents and presentations.
  • Use mechanically and grammatically effective language in written documents and presentation displays.
  • Participate actively in electronic activities and discussions.
  • Maintain an individual print or electronic portfolio of workplace communication, including self-assessment.
