How Do I Succeed in This Course? Great enterprises have a second bottom line: a return on human investment that advances a larger purpose.

How to succeed: Invent. Reinvent. Repeat

Design is the planned process of change. Instead of something changing by accident, design demands that we plan change so that we end up with the results we want.

Technology is all about design. Computers and networks are transforming every aspect of our lives. As networks converge, almost everything we use, or do, involves some kind of interaction: us and the system, or between one object and another. Interaction. Design shapes the kind of experience we have when this takes place. English is all about experiences and interactions. Education is about enhancing relationships, invisible processes, and services that adapt to an individual’s needs and preferences. This is a completely new kind of design... guess who the designer is?

I USE A TIME MAP Time Map. Re-assess your schedule from time to time. Are you keeping up to date in all your subjects? Do you need to allocate more time to study generally, or to certain subjects? Do you need to study at different times?

"Telephone Circle"

If working with other students appeals to you and your circumstances permit, take advantage of discussion boards on blackboard or form your own. . These student initiated groups have the potential to provide a range of student based learning opportunities complementary to those organized by me. By creating a learning environment which incudes working directly with the other students doing your topic, you can add another aspect to your education.

If you live close to other students you may wish to meet with them on a regular basis. Though there are distinct advantages in meeting face to face. This is not the only way of achieving good student interaction. The technologies available to us today mean that personal communication can be achieved by less direct means. Here are just a few suggestions. Write to (an)other student(s) sharing useful readings, commenting on ideas, etc. Make some quick notes (interesting points, helpful readings, difficulties) about your study, photocopy them and send them to members of the group. Members of the group may respond (a phone call, a copy of a useful article, the name of a book). The next week another member does the same. In this way everyone receives regular contact with minimal effort.

Keep regular telephone contact either individually or as a teleconference. Organize a telephone circle so that each person regularly rings another at a suitable time. In this way you are in contact with two other people on a regular basis. Also, feel free to use the "virtual classroom" feature on blackboard. Arrange with another student to give you feedback on your assignments. When you send an assignment to me, send another copy to the student for comment. Or, use a fax machines to communicate information quickly.

What is the the philosophy of this DE course? There is a new vision developed during the past 15-20 years, strongly influenced by the social and cognitive sciences. The educational system is now focused on learning rather than on teaching. The developments of learning theory have changed the nature of learning and the perception of the learner. Knowledge is considered as "socially constructed through action, communication and reflection involving learners." (Pea, 1992:77). In addition, the classical view of teaching as telling or delivering curricula has turned into "modelling expert practice, and promoting learning conversations that negotiate meaning to promote change in learner concepts and strategies toward proficient performances." (ibidem). For instance, teachers then will gradually become advisors, managers and facilitators of learning rather than providers of information (Bates, 1993). Necessarily, distance education has been involved by this evolution.
