| Biography
René Depestre was
born in Haiti in 1926 and began his poetic way with Jacmel, in the island
of Haiti. He lived in Cuba as an exile from the Duvalierregime for many
years and was a founder of the Cassa de las Americas publishing
house. He is best known for his poetry. The youths of the poet are
placed under the sign of marvellous (in Haiti, the voodoo does good housework
with Christianity). He now resides in France.
