Biography

Julia Alvarez was born in New York City on March 27,1950.  However her parents brought her back to their native Dominican Republic when she was less than a year old.  Alvarez was sent to Abbot Academy because her father was part of the movement against the dictator Rafael Trujillo.  This is when she took up the English language and her newly found love, writing.  She attained her B.A. from Middlebury College in Vermont and her M.F.A. from Syracuse University in 1975.  Since 1988, she has been an instructor at Middlebury University where she has taught English and Creative Writing.  She married Bill Eichner on June 3,1989.
