Experiment
21 WASTE DISPOSAL/CLEAN-UP Some of the waste generated will be in the form of precipitates. Use your stirring rod to loosen the precipitate and pour the suspension into a small waste beaker at your lab station. Use the same beaker to collect other liquid waste. Small amounts of waste adhering to the test tubes may be washed into the sink. At the end of lab, pour the waste from your beaker into the labeled waste jug on the side bench. The heavy metals will be precipitated with sodium carbonate and the supernatant liquid decanted and then neutralized. The neutralized decantate will be flushed down the drain, but the remaining precipitate will be sent to a chemical disposal company. All solid and solution waste should be placed in the container marked Anion Waste. The solids will be filtered and disposed of as hazardous waste; the solution will be neutralized and concentrated before disposal. Be sure to wash all glassware thoroughly after use.
