1.
|
Always
wear safety goggles in the lab. You are also required
to wear shoes that cover the entire foot. No open toes, heels, or
arches. |
|
2.
|
When
heating a test tube, never point its mouth toward anyone. |
|
3.
|
Do
not purposefully smell the gases generated by chemical reactions. |
|
4.
|
Read
the label carefully before removing the chemical from a container,
because serious accidents can occur, in some cases, if the incorrect
chemicals are combined. Label your container before obtaining chemicals
so that they will not be confused after you return to your work
station. |
|
5.
|
Care
must be exercised in the handling of all chemicals. If any chemical
is spilled on the hands, immediately flush with water. If
strong acid or base is spilled on the hands, further treatment may
also be necessary. If acid or base is spilled on the clothes, flush
with water, if possible, and contact your instructor immediately
for advice. |
|
6.
|
Because of
the presence of toxic chemicals in the lab, never eat or
drink in the lab. Also do not put objects (pens, pencils, hands,
etc.) in the mouth while in the lab. Such objects may have come
into contact with toxic substances which could be accidentally
ingested in this manner.
|
|
7.
|
Carry
out all operations involving noxious gases under the hood. |
|
8.
|
Carefully
follow the instructions in the lab experiment. Do not substitute
equipment or attempt a different procedure unless so advised by
your instructor. |
|
9.
|
Always
wash your hands before leaving the laboratory. |
|
10.
|
Dispose
of waste as discussed in the experimental procedure or as directed
by your instructor. |
| 11. |
Discard cracked
or chipped glassware.
|
| 12. |
Never
pipette by mouth. Always use the suction bulb for drawing solutions
into the pipette. |
