Experiment 1
Fundamental Laboratory Techniques

OBJECTIVE
The objective of Experiment 1 is to prepare for future experiments by learning basic laboratory proceedures. It is necessary to learn certain fundamental laboratory techniques important in chemistry. These include the measurement of mass, volume, temperature and pressure. These are the basis for chemical experimentation. In this experiment the balance will be used to determine mass. Volume will be measured using a graduated cylinder, pipettes and a burette.

Although the mass of a liquid varies directly with its volume, the ratio of mass to volume is a constant which varies only slightly with temperature or pressure changes. The mass to volume ratio (Equation 1) is known as density and can be useful in the identification of substances.

Equation No. 1:
Density=

OVERVIEW

In this experiment you will:

  1. measure water volumes in the following ways:
    • between 10 and 12 mL using a 100 mL graduated cylinder
    • between 10 and 12 mL using a burette
    • exactly 10.00 mL using a 10 mL volumetric pipette
    • exactly 25.00 mL using a 25 mL volumetric pipette.

  2. You will determine the proper number of significant figures for each measurement made with graduated scales.

  3. The mass of the water measured will be determined and the density calculated.

  4. The precision (agreement of successive measurements with each other) and the accuracy (agreement of the measurement with the true or accepted value) of the four pieces of measuring equipment will be compared.
