Experiment

Fundamental
Laboratory Techniques
OBJECTIVE
The objective
of Experiment 1 is to prepare for future experiments by learning basic
laboratory proceedures. It is necessary to learn certain fundamental
laboratory techniques important in chemistry. These include the measurement
of mass, volume, temperature and pressure. These are the basis for chemical
experimentation. In this experiment the balance will be used to determine
mass. Volume will be measured using a graduated cylinder, pipettes and
a burette.
Although
the mass of a liquid varies directly with its volume, the ratio of mass
to volume is a constant which varies only slightly with temperature
or pressure changes. The mass to volume ratio (Equation 1) is known
as density and can be useful in the identification of substances.
