| Arachnids comprise a fairly diverse assemblage of terrestrial arthropods; however, despite their numbers, very little is known about their biology. Understanding this group of organisms is crucial for understanding arthropod phylogeny and other aspects of arthropod biology. Arachnids constitute essential elements of the ecosystem in that they reside at intermediate trophic levels, and contribute a substantial percentage of biomass to their respective ecosystems. Furthermore, a fair number of scorpions and spiders possess medically significant venom that is capable of causing human mortality. Therefore, a basic understanding of arachnid biodiversity (to include systematics, taxonomy and evolution) is essential to answering nearly all questions related to arachnid biology. My research, then, attempts to answer questions directly related to this poorly defined diversity. However, my secondary interests are more general in scope and include a diverse array of fields within biology: conservation biology, biological inventories (e.g., regional floras and faunas), biogeography, geographic information systems, herpetology, natural history and ecology. To date, my major focus has been on Mexican and Middle Eastern scorpions (primarily from the families Vaejovidae and Buthidae), but in this lab, I will concentrate on the group of arachnids I had always hoped to work with: mygalomorph spiders (e.g., tarantulas, trapdoor spiders and their relatives). |
